The Tea Secret of Castle Arff – A Story That Comes Alive in Every Cup
It was a discovery straight out of history books—hidden treasures unearthed from the ancient walls of a castle, carrying the whispers of long-lost tales.
During extensive restoration work at the historic Castle Arff, the descendants of the noble von Landsberg-Velen family stumbled upon an extraordinary find. Deep within an old, vaulted cellar, surrounded by yellowed documents and forgotten heirlooms, they uncovered long-lost records that told an incredible story.
These documents revealed the forgotten tea recipes of Freiherr Friedrich Leopold Geyr von Schweppenburg, a passionate tea enthusiast and adventurer. In 1878, he traveled to the exotic island of Sri Lanka—then known as Ceylon—in pursuit of the mysteries behind tea cultivation and the art of blending. He returned to Castle Arff with carefully crafted tea blends made exclusively for him by local tea masters. After his passing, these precious recipes were thought to be lost forever—until their serendipitous rediscovery in the castle cellar.
The rediscovered recipes became the inspiration for something truly extraordinary. In collaboration with the tea experts Scheibler Tea Ltd. from Hamburg, renowned for their expertise and passion for fine tea blends for more than 120 years, the historic recipes have been lovingly reimagined. The essence of the original remains intact: flavors reminiscent of exotic plantations combined with aromatic herbs from lush gardens, resulting in distinctive creations that delight the senses. The final result of this journey is two exquisite creations: Rooibos Cream Caramel and East Frisian Tea Blend, crafted exclusively for Expo 2025 in Osaka.
